Founded by William Barton Rogers, Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been operational for more than 100 years. Located in Cambridge, Mass., MIT is one of the leading technical institutions in the United States. A coeducational institution, it comprises more than five schools and colleges, and enrolls over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students annually. MIT also comprises more than 35 academic departments, divisions, degree-granting programs, interdisciplinary centers and laboratories. The institute is approved by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and the American Chemical Society. It offers a wide variety of courses, such as architecture and planning, media arts and sciences, urban studies, aeronautics and astronomy, and mechanical, nuclear science, biological, chemical, civil and environmental engineering.
