It is simply an altered state of consciousness. Daydreaming is an illustration of an altered state of consciousness. Have you experienced driving past your turn or arriving at your destination at what seemed to be a short period of time? This is legally known as “Highway Hypnosis”. Your eyes are open and you see and hear what is occurring around you. If you need to stop at a light, you respond appropriately. You have the ability to change your thought pattern in a split second if need be. These are examples of light stages of consciousness. When you drift into sleep, before dreaming, while dreaming, after dreaming, before awakening, and just after awakening are all examples of altered states of consciousness. Between sleep and awakening, you have experience all of the stages utilized in hypnosis with the difference being you are guided to a relaxed state similar to sleep.
