General Info

Mission Our Mission Is To Speak For The Animals History The Coconino Humane Association was founded in 1955 by a group of concerned and dedicated people who felt there needed to be a change in the way animals were being treated in our community. The shelter was built with donations from businesses, service organizations, and a few very dedicated individuals. The Forest Service leased five acres to the Humane Shelter, located in the area where Interstate 40 and Butler Avenue now intersect. Even with these contributions, it took three years to complete the project, most of the work was preformed by the founders themselves and in 1958 the people in Northern Arizona had their first Animal Shelter. In the early 1970's due to the construction of I-40 and the growth of Flagstaff, the Forest Service did not renew the lease on the land that the shelter was built upon. The Humane Society was faced with finding a new location. Again with the help of residents, local businesses, and matching funds from the Bois Dubois Foundation, the Coconino Humane Association in 1972 started the construction of a new facility to care for the homeless and unwanted animals in Northern Arizona. The shelter is located in the area of Fourth Street and Butler Avenue, where it remains today. Mailing Address P.O. Box 66 Flagstaff, Arizona 86002

An Amazing Small Town Shelter

I have been to this shelter several times. While every time I am sad for the animals in their care, Iam not sad because of the shelter or employees or in comparison to other shelters. I am sad because they have been abandoned by their owners. that's the bottom line. It is YOU, dear irresponsible pet owner, that should be to blame for the poor situations these animals find themselves in. The shelter does everything they can to help these defenseless, voiceless creatures while all YOU do is complain. Donate your money or your time or toys or blankets - don't just sit at your computer and whine. They have no breed restrictions, no time constraints, no drop off fees and they DO NOT ask questions. they HAVE to admit EVERY animal that walks through the door. Help them, don't hate them.

Doggy Death Camp

Doggy Death CampThe Coconino 'Humane' Society won't tell me how many dogs they kill every week?'Humane' is a bit of a misnomer. Doggy Death Camp is closer to the truth. My dog Spot was picked up and they want $100 + $12 a day.I offered to work in exchange for his freedom and they refused.I can't afford bailing my dog out. I haven't worked for two years. The 'Humane' Society would rather kill my dog than give him back.Ask them yourself. Please call the Coconino Humane Society @ 928-526-1076.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Coconino animal shelter. It was an extremely dismal experience. When comparing Flagstaff?s shelter to other similar Arizona communities (Prescott, Sedona and the much less populated Wickenburg) I found the condition of its shelter to be outdated, appalling and inhumane. I tried to justify the condition with quick animal rotation until I was told they recently had a dog residing there for three months. That is horrific. The leadership should be reevaluated and consult from the Humane Society of the US should be invited as well as an independent auditor to ensure financial integrity.

Flagstaff promotes its community reputation as 'dog loving' yet this shelter taints that reputation by leaving one with a sense of ambiguity, sadness, embarrassment and dread. I make these observations not as a casual observer, but as someone who has been intimately involved in the field. I have several years of profit and nonprofit business management and animal sheltering experience working for both large and small organizations. In fact, I once worked for a small humane society in the South with demographics very simila
