General Info
Merrill Robyn Cohen founded this law firm in 1994. She heads up her own immigration firm, Merrill R. Cohen & Associates, PC., in midtown Manhattan. Currently, as of January 2011, the firm has two associate attorneys, Adam S. Cohen and Frieda Shapiro, each of whom has over nine years of experience in top immigration law firms.Throughout her career, Ms. Cohen has handled a wide range of immigration matters including political asylum, deportation/ removal, motions and appeals. Over the past 10 years, the Law Office has primarily handled business and family immigration matters and a select number of asylum and criminal immigration/ removal cases. Ms. Cohen personally handles primarily EB-1, EB-2, PERM and complex O-1, L-1 and H-1B cases. Clients include research hospitals, universities and corporations, and a wide variety of professionals: research scientists, engineers, computer science professionals, engineers, marketing managers and researchers, architects, fashion designers, TV producers, writers, mathematicians, artists, graphic designers, actors, models, and musicians. Of particular note, Ms. Cohen and her office have obtained green cards for many internationally-recognized research scientists (mainly cancer researchers), athletes (top-ranked squash players) and artists (actors, designers and painters).Ms. Cohen was profiled in a feature article about her in the New York Law Journal magazine. She has been interviewed on CBS and FOX TV. In May 2008, Merrill Cohen gained international attention when her immigration client’s fur coat was taken by Lindsay Lohan. Ms. Cohen filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of New York, which she later settled. The incident made international headlines including the front page of the New York Post, and articles in People Magazine and many other national publications. Most recently, in October 2010, Ms. Cohen lectured to other lawyers on how to properly present EB-1 and PERM CASES. She was appointed to the Presidential Commission (2008) and received the Congressional Medal of Distinction (2007), the Ronald Reagan Gold Medal (2005) and the National Leadership Award (2002 and 2003). She is also noted in Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals, and serves as Honorary Co-Chairman of the Business Advisory Council. She is a longstanding member of the American Immigration Law Association. Merrill Cohen is a cum laude graduate of Yeshiva University Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she was a member of the Law Review. She is a cum laude graduate of Brooklyn College, with a major in Economics and a concentration in Film Studies. She is admitted to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, Second Judicial Department, State of New York as well as to the U.S. District Court, SDNY and the U.S. District Court, EDNY.
