I started going to physical therapy for lymphodema after a hysterectomy and removal of 20 lymph nodes. Since I was diagnosed early, and started physical therapy just after I'd finished chemo and just before I started radiation, I have been able to manage it quite well. At first I went twice a week, and then after a few weeks, once a week. It helped me to regain my strength also, although right after radiation treatments, I wasn't able to do much. It's been quite encouraging to see the progress I made from the testing that they did when I started, and again after three months of therapy. Next week is my last session. I have appreciated the professionalism of the physical therapy team, their terrific team work, and the level of interest in my recovery process. I have always felt that the staff was concerned, first and foremost, with their patient's well being and physical improvement, far more than making money. I have loved going to physical therapy for the warmth and friendliness of the staff, and the support that I have received there. The facility itself is always filled with light, it seems. And though the staff has not specialized in treating lymphodema, they had treated patients with it before. Whatever they did, it worked well for me... whether it was the massage each session started with, or the exercise routine they gave me, or the exercises I was shown to do twice daily at home (some with an exercise ball), or most likely, a combination of these. I have come to enjoy exercising, something I never liked doing before.
