Charles Ashbrook, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in outpatient care of young adults and adults with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders. A guiding principal of his clinical practice is to review, simplify, and optimize his patients medication regimens, using evidence-based approaches.As a psychiatrist at an academic medical center, Dr. Ashbrook instructs residents at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has a passion for medical education and teaching, particularly in the areas of psychiatric interviewing, psychotherapy, and descriptive psychopathology as it relates to diagnostics. He has won many teaching awards while at Naval Medical Center San Diego, and upon leaving his position with the Navy, he was also awarded the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award.Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Ashbrook was an assistant professor of psychiatry with the Navy, affiliated with Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. He was also the division officer for the 36-bed inpatient psychiatric unit at Naval Medical Center San Diego.Dr. Ashbrook completed residency training in psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine and earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He is board-certified in psychiatry and is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Medical Association.In his spare time, he enjoys reading, traveling, and rooting for his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Notre Dame.
