San Diego often described as the birthplace of California; Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered San Diego Bay in 1542, however it was 200 years before Europeans settled in the San Diego area. San Diego became part of the United States in 1848 and the town was named the county seat of San Diego County at the same time California was granted statehood in 1850. Beginning in 1968, San Diego's urban renewal project focused on the Gaslamp Quarter, with the goal of making the area a national historic district and bringing upper- and middle-class tourists and suburban residents to the downtown San Diego area. Since the 1980’s, the city has seen the opening of the revival of the Gaslamp Quarter, Horton Plaza shopping center and the construction of the San Diego Convention Center. In fact, the 1996 Republican National Convention was headquartered at the San Diego Convention Center. The San Diego Convention Center also hosts the San Diego Comic-Con International, which has been reported to be the largest convention of its type in the world. San Diego is reported to be the eighth largest city in the country. As like most cities in North America, San Diego has a diverse community of ethnic populations. By the year 2011, California was reported to be the home to 45 percent of all Filipino immigrants in the United States. And by 2012, there were an estimated 94,000 Filipino immigrants residing in San Diego. The Chinese community is another prominent community in San Diego. By the late 20th century, it was reported that the San Diego Chinese community was made up of a heterogeneous population, including Cantonese-speaking, Hokkien-speaking and Mandarin-speaking members, as well as those from a variety of places or origin, one of them being Southeast Asia.
