General Info
James Hammel, M.D., M.A., M.Sc. (Oxon), F.A.P.A. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa pre-med from Stanford University, Dr. Hammel graduated with his M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his Internship at Stanford and his Residency at Harvard, where he was Chief Resident. He also holds graduate degrees from Stanford University (in Psychology) and Oxford University (in Medical Sciences, By Research), where he was a US-UK Fulbright Scholar. He has been named a Webb Fellow by the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, and he has won awards from the Society for Liaison Psychiatry, the Association of AmericanMedical Colleges, and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hammel is fellowship-trained in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and double board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both Psychiatry and the sub-specialty of Psychosomatic Medicine/Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry. Bilingual in English and Spanish, he has been working in mental health for more than 20 years. He has conducted research internationally and has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He has been a psychiatric expert witness in courts around the country and is medically licensed in the states of Washington, Oregon, New York, Arizona, and Massachusetts. Prior to starting his private practice in Seattle, Dr. Hammel worked as an outpatient and consultation-liaison psychiatrist in private practice, clinics, and hospitals on both sides of the country. A Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association and member of the Washington State Psychiatric Association, he is a Life Member of both the National Eagle Scout Association and the Stanford Alumni Association, and has been on the Board of Directors of the National Hemophilia Foundation, as well as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai, Albert Einstein, and Western University of Health Sciences Schools of Medicine.
