- Veterinary OphthalmologyGlaucoma is a common condition in which the fluid pressure inside the eye increases, resulting in damage to the optic nerve, followed by loss of vision and blindness. There are two types of glaucoma. Primary, or chronic, glaucoma is hereditary or develops as your pet ages. Secondary, or acute, glaucoma develops as the result of an injury or illness. Because secondary glaucoma can progress rapidly, it is considered an emergency situation.
- Behavioral CounselingDr. Ballou has a special interest in behavior counseling (and many classes under her belt), which allows MapleShade Animal Hospital to offer this option to address many potential behavioral issues. Our behavioral counseling team can provide assistance with issues including inappropriate urination or defecation, urine marking, aggression, nipping and biting, separation anxiety, inappropriate chewing and barking, digging, chewing, and introduction of new pets into the household.
- Nutritional CounselingIf you are unfamiliar with the holistic approach to medicine, it simply means that we will take our time to look at your pet in a "whole" view. We offer both conventional and nutritional counseling. This consists of acupuncture, laser therapy, natural supplements, and nutritional counseling. Our veterinarians not only examine and treat the body - we care for your "whole" pet. In a holistic view we consider all the variables that could influence your pet's physical health and well-being.
- Comprehensive ExaminationTo support your efforts, the doctors at MapleShade Animal Hospital perform a thorough body condition evaluation during every physical examination, and give recommendations based on what we see. We can also provide you with important information on proper serving size, nutrient needs, and feeding strategies for your individual pet. We will also help you navigate pet food claims so you can make the most informed choices.
- Parasites Treatment and ControlAt our pharmacy, we maintain a comprehensive inventory of pharmaceuticals, vitamins, shampoos, flea and tick control products and heartworm preventatives to meet your pet's needs. We also carry Royal Canin prescription pet food.
- Pain ManagementTo best protect your pet's health and overall well-being, MapleShade Animal Hospital offers a broad range of veterinary services. While our focus is on pain management through acupuncture and therapeutic laser treatments, you can also rely on our skilled, compassionate medical team when your pet is sick. To that end, an important part of our practice is the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases that can affect your pet's internal organs and body systems.

- Skin Condition and Allergy TreatmentFlea allergy is the most common allergy in cats. A normal cat experiences only minor skin irritation at the site of the bite. The flea-allergic cat, on the other hand, has a severe, itch-producing reaction when the flea's saliva is deposited in the skin. Just one bite causes such intense itching that the cat may severely scratch or chew itself, leading to hair loss and open sores or scabs on the skin. The area most commonly involved is over the rump or base of the tail.

- Parvovirus Infection TreatmentCore Vaccinations for Dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Parainfluenza (DHLPP) every three years until your dog is 10 years old; and Rabies every three years
- Feline Retro Virus TreatmentCore Vaccinations for Kittens: Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panlueukopnia (FRCP) and Rabies. Initial series of the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) vaccine also encouraged
- Urinary Tract Infection TreatmentDue to the long length of the urethra, female dogs are more prone to urinary tract infections than male dogs. Diabetic animals have an increased amount of glucose in the urine, which may promote bacterial growth and cause infection.
- Diabetes Treatment
- Kidney Disease TreatmentExamination of the urine is also important for diagnosing kidney disease. The specific gravity (of the urine) compares the weight of urine to the weight of water, detecting functional problems with the kidneys. The specific gravity indicates how well the animal is concentrating its urine. If the specific gravity is low (approaching that of water), the kidneys may not be eliminating the body's waste products properly into the urine. Instead of eliminating the waste products into the urine, they accumulate in the blood stream and cause problems.
- Periodontal Disease TreatmentDental disease, specifically periodontal disease, is the most common ailment affecting pet dogs and cats. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, more than 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats develop gum disease by the age of three years. Periodontal disease can have a serious impact on your pet's well-being and general health.
